Charles Eames Soft Pad Chair EA 208

The Eames EA 208 is produced on the same basis as its brother EA 108. Only the attached pads - hence the name Soft Pad Chair - make the difference.

The seating comfort is made much more comfortable by attaching said pads to the back and seat. In addition, the Eames Soft Pad Chair looks stunning either way.

The Soft Pad Chair´s  area of application are writing and conference tables. However, this EA 208 model has also been spotted on dining room tables on several occasions.

The die-cast aluminum frame of the Soft Pad model series is high-gloss chrome-plated and rotatably mounted. The five arm high polished chrome base is equipped with glides.

Our model is manufactured and delivered in full leather. This means that the back cover of the rear part is also covered in the same material as the seat and back of the inner sides. (Attention! Cheap suppliers - especially from the Far East - cannot offer this quality detail!)

More facts about the Charles Eames Soft Pad Chair EA 208

The specification for the Aluminium Group was a chair that was suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. At the same time, the use of material was to be kept to a minimum and the volume was also to be minimized.

After a development period of three years, the first prototypes of the "Leisure Group" were created in 1958. The design principle follows the formation of a load-bearing textile seat shell stretched between two aluminum profiles. Horizontal seams (today high-frequency welded) provide stiffening of the fabric and prevent the shell from "sitting through". At the bottom and top of the shell, a roll-up of the fabric provides an elegant yet comfortable edge and creates a handsome finish.

The seat cover consists of five layers of different materials and ensures a very high level of seating comfort despite a minimal amount of padding. The clamping construction is visible through the use of so-called clasps in the back and seat area, giving the chair an additional visual lightness.

Through the consistent application of the construction principle and the use of identical parts, different variants have been created over time:Office and conference chairs (EA 117, 119, 219, 108, 208), stools (EA 125, EA 225), lounge chairs (EA 124, EA 224). Vinyl, fabric, leather and mesh (from 1984) were used as upholstery.

The variant with sewn-on, additional upholstery pockets, realized from 1969, is available under the name "Soft Pad", initially in fabric and leather variants, now only in leather.
